The water here is so clear that it’s almost like snorkeling in an aquarium.
I’ll never forget my first visit to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, located just off Ambergris Caye. The visibility was amazing, and I was practically swimming alongside a school of giant parrotfish. If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t miss out on the Blue Hole. It’s a bit more for experienced divers, but even if you’re just snorkeling around the edge, you’ll be amazed by the depth and color of the water.
Pro tip: Bring biodegradable sunscreen. The reefs here are delicate, and protecting the environment is a must!
2. The Baths, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
I had no idea what to expect when I first set foot in The Baths on Virgin Gorda. The dramatic granite boulders scattered along the shoreline make the place look like something out of a fantasy novel. But beneath the surface? It’s a whole other story.

Pigeon Island is a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to snorkeling in the Caribbean. It’s not as famous as some other spots, which means you get a little more peace and quiet when you’re in the water. But don’t let its lower profile fool you—it’s still home to incredible marine life.
I had one of the most intimate snorkeling experiences here. The waters are calm, the visibility is amazing, and you’ll see a range of fish species, like parrotfish, wrasse, and even the occasional octopus. There’s a small reef just off the shore that’s perfect for beginner snorkelers, and for the more experienced, you can swim out to deeper waters where you’ll spot schools of fish and the occasional ray gliding by.
And for something extra special, if you’ve got the energy, hike to the top of the island afterward. The panoramic views from the top are incredible!
6. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
Last but certainly not least, Grand Cayman is a world-renowned snorkeling destination, and for good reason. The crystal-clear waters here are home to some of the healthiest coral reefs in the Caribbean. One of the most famous spots is Stingray City, where you can snorkel or even wade through shallow waters filled with friendly stingrays. I was a little nervous at first, but I quickly warmed up to the idea when I saw how gentle and curious these creatures were.
The island also has several other great spots, like Coral Gardens and the North Wall, where you can see everything from colorful fish to incredible underwater formations. The water is warm year-round, and because of the protection efforts in place, the reefs here are incredibly healthy.
